Engineered Stone (Quartz)
Discover the warmth and richness that can only be achieved with natural quartz surfaces– where elegance and beauty meet function and lasting durability.
Engineered stone is a man-made surface consisting of 93% crushed quartz. The quartz is combined with high-quality polymer resins and pigments and then compacted under intense vibration, vacuum, and pressure into dense, non-porous slabs. The slabs are post cured, gauged to precise thickness, and polished to an enduring shine. Engineered stone is also one of the most sanitary surfaces available on the market today.
DURABILITY
Only three other natural minerals - diamond, sapphire and topaz - are harder than quartz. Because quartz is one of nature’s strongest materials, engineered stone is incredibly durable and resists both heat and scratches. Quartz is also non-porous making it highly resistant to stains and very sanitary.
VERSATILITY
Engineered stone can be used in virtually any indoor surfacing application in areas such as kitchens, bathrooms and floors. Some common applications are countertops, vanities, tub and shower surrounds, backsplashes, walls, wet bars, tabletops, desktops, and fireplace surrounds. Commonly used for superior residential countertops, engineered stone is now offered as an attractive and versatile finish for commercial and institutional buildings. Engineered stone is tough enough for the wear and tear on just about any interior surface and beautiful enough for every architectural and decorating scheme.
SCRATCH-RESISTANCE
The quartz in engineered stone makes it naturally scratch-resistant. Only diamond, sapphire, and topaz are harder than quartz. Quartz is a seven on Mohs mineral hardness scale (diamond is a 10). So, while a careless slip of the knife will scratch most other countertops such as laminate and solid surface, it won't leave a mark on engineered stone. Although engineered stone is durable, it is not scratch-proof; it could be damaged by excessive force or pressure.
STAIN-RESISTANCE
Engineered stone is non-porous; therefore, it is highly resistant to stains from coffee, wine, lemon juice, and many other common household products. Unlike granite, engineered stone does not need to be sealed to keep its lustrous shine.
HEAT-RESISTANCE
Unlike solid surface and laminate, engineered stone is heat-resistant and will withstand limited exposure to heat without burning or scorching. The flame of a lit match will not mar engineered stone. However, as advised by manufacturers, do not place items such as crock pots, electric skillets or curling irons directly on any countertop. Always use trivets when placing hot items on any natural stone or quartz surface to avoid thermal shock.
STRENGTH
Engineered stone has four times the flexural strength of granite, making it less susceptible to chipping and cracking during transportation and installation. It has no fissures or veins that could compromise its strength.
MAINTENANCE-FREE
Because it is non-porous, quartz does not need to be sealed. Granite, marble, and limestone, on the other hand, must be sealed at the time of installation and resealed regularly to prevent staining. With engineered stone, no time or money will ever need to be spent on rigorous maintenance for stain clean up, scratches and scorch marks.
COLOR SELECTION
Engineered stone comes in a variety of beautiful colors. The natural richness and depth of quartz make it a very popular choice. Unlike natural stone, the actual surface color will be consistent with the sample you receive.

TESTIMONIALS
"We were extremely pleased with the services we received from Surface Designs on our countertop remodeling project. We found Mr. Evans to be very helpful and knowledgeable in terms of giving us information about the different countertop materials available and their individual pros and cons. We finally decided on a Cambria product, which was installed within three weeks of our purchase. Surface Designs was also very helpful in terms of ordering and installing a new sink. They made the necessary arrangements with the plumber to reconnect the faucets. Our new Cambria countertops were expertly installed and have immensely improved the look of our open concept kitchen. I would strongly encourage anyone who is thinking about purchasing new countertops to contact Surface Designs to explore their options with them."
